Ringfencing
What is ringfencing?
Ringfencing is a security technique that restricts what approved applications can do on your system - limiting which files they can access, which other applications they can interact with, and what network connections they can make. Even legitimate software is kept contained.
Why it matters
Attackers often exploit legitimate software to do their damage - hijacking a trusted application to access files or spread through your network. Ringfencing prevents this by confining applications to only what they need to do their job.
How we implement it
We implement ringfencing policies around high-risk applications in your environment, defining strict boundaries around their behavior. These policies are maintained and updated as your software environment evolves.
What your organization gets
Contains Application Abuse
Even if a trusted application is exploited, it can't be used to cause widespread damage.
Limits Blast Radius
Restrict how far an attacker can move even if they gain a foothold.
Works Alongside Other Controls
Adds an effective layer without replacing existing security tools.
Targeted Protection
Applied to the highest-risk applications for maximum impact.
Common questions
What is ringfencing?
Rules that control what your approved applications can do, not just whether they run. Your word processor has no reason to launch system tools or reach strange corners of the internet, so it is not allowed to.
Why does that matter if the application is legitimate?
Modern attacks hijack trusted programs and use them for malicious work, which sails past ordinary defenses. Ringfencing means even a hijacked application cannot act outside its normal job.
Will ringfencing break the software we rely on?
No. Policies are built from observing how your applications genuinely behave during the learning period, then enforced around that reality. Normal function is the baseline, not the casualty.
